The Asia-Europe Art Camp project is an initiative set up by Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) in 2003 focusing on New Media Art. The project aims at developing a platform promoting dialogue for art students, to learn more about each other’s contexts, cultures and get inspired during a week of lectures, workshops and cultural visits. Focusing more on the creative process than on the “artistic product”, the Camp has been designed as a learning experience and an opportunity for professional development.
In conjunction with ISEA 2008, the 6th Art Camp gathers 20 artists or students, mostly in their final year of study, from 16 ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) countries for an intensive week of workshops, lectures and meetings as well as artistic and collaborative work. A team of Asia-Europe artistic advisors and resource persons specialised in art and technology will led and facilitate the workshops during the camp.
Conceptualised around the theme of gaming, the camp will focus on the nature of our contemporary ludic culture while taking into account the psychology of and theories about gaming. Electronic games and their roles in society will be discussed as well as the possibilities for Asia-Europe game development collaborations and industry-artist-researcher partnerships.
Through an intensive programme of lectures, workshops and project work, the participants will conclude the camp with a presentation of their creative collaborations with a special showcase on the last day of the camp. The project aims at developing a platform to promote dialogue among art students and for them to learn more about one another’s contexts and cultures.
The students will also be given the opportunity to participate in the critically acclaimed ISEA 2008 conference as well as contribute their thoughts and recommendations in the New Media Art policy meeting, both held alongside the camp.
